Building a Running Routine

Regular running is a fantastic way to stay fit, keep your mind sharp, and even manage stress levels. Whether you’re a seasoned sprinter or a dedicated couch potato, building a running routine doesn’t have to be a drag. In fact, most seasoned runners insist that the right routine can transform running from a chore to your favorite time of the day.

Getting Started

The first step to building your running routine is ring-fencing the time. Ideally, you’ll establish a certain time of day when you’ll always be running. Some people find that sprinting in the mornings is the best way to wake up their body and mind, while others prefer lacing up their trainers after work to burn off the stress.

Choose time slots that can comfortably become yours to keep — and then make sure you do just that. Treat these slots as important appointments. One of the best parts of building a routine is that it removes the choice — we tend to do things automatically once they’ve become a part of our routine. And there’s no reason why this shouldn’t work for running as well.

Equip yourself

Before you start, make sure you have the right shoes. A well-fitted pair of running shoes can help you avoid injuries and make your run much more enjoyable. Remember, the most expensive pair isn’t always the best fit for you, so take your time to choose wisely.

Setting Goals

Pick what you’re running for. Are you in it to lose weight? Perhaps you want to improve your half marathon time, or you’re looking to clear your mind. Your goals will heavily influence your routine, so know why you’re lacing up those running shoes.

Plan a Route

The perfect route is waiting out there for you, and all you need to do is find it. When you’re just starting out, pick a route that is manageable in terms of distance and challenging enough in terms of terrain. This will keep your runs interesting.

Listen to Your Body

Remember, your routine should work for you, not against you. If you find yourself feeling too exhausted or getting injured, take a step back and reassess. You’re in it for the long run, quite literally, and pushing yourself too hard too soon is unwise.

Remember, consistency is the key. Stick to your routine, and soon enough, you’ll find yourself not just attaining, but exceeding your running goals. Happy Running!
